Finding the perfect skirt style
by Suzie Clarins
From ruffled mini skirts to knee length pencil styles there are plenty to suit every body type and choosing the correct hemline for your body, height and age is important no matter what the current style might be in the clothes fashion world. But how do you find the perfect skirt length and style for you?

The first factor you need to consider is your body shape. There are a few common body shapes and it’s best to measure your hips, waist and stomach to find out which shape you are and to help with the searching for skirts while shopping. It’s also a good idea to look at fashion magazines for the latest styles, but keep in mind your age and height as models tend to be young and tall for the fashion industry. Once you know your shape the following may help you find the right style.

If your measurements are all similar and your body is more of a rounder shape, your body style is classed as a full curve generally used for larger women. Try to avoid large patterns or drawstring waists and look for darker coloured designs, which are great for drawing attention to your upper body. Long tailored skirts help to draw attention to your slimmer ankles and also help to keep your stomach in check.

If your body has a waist measurement that is slightly smaller than your hips and stomach you have what is called a pear shaped frame. If you wish to calm your curves, go for patterned designs such as sunray skirts to disguise your lumpy areas or high waisted skirts are great for showing off your curvy behind and drawing attention to your smaller waist. Wearing light coloured tops with darker coloured skirts are great for this effect too.

If your shape is quite the opposite of this, and you have a body that is up and down with little curves, you may have what is called a straight or boyish frame. Your waist and hip measurements will most likely be similar and tight fitting clothes tend to cling and emphasise your straight lines. The correct styles to buy for this shape are pleated skirts, or ones with poofy designs to help create some curves for your body.

Whatever your size, there is no reason to not look glamorous on a night out, or professional in the office. Skirts are great for all occasions and provide you with the chance to show off those brand new shoes you’ve purchased. It is just a matter of finding the right design to suit you.
